Marshmallows are the quintessential campfire treat: messy, melty and gooey, much better for a short while in the flames, and nothing like the food you normally eat indoors. We always make sure to keep a bag or two in the cupboard for last-minute camping trips or back garden cook outs.
As we've challenged ourselves to grill outdoors every day this week in honour of #NationalBBQWeek (head over to our Facebook page to watch our daily BBQ week vlogs), we thought we'd share a quick and tasty recipe for that tried-and-true classic, Rice Krispie Treats. These are cheap, quick and great for feeding a crowd; you can even get the kids to help out.
- 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
- 1 bag of marshmallows
- 6 cups Rice Krispies or other similar cereal
Get a fire going in your stove and melt the butter in a saucepan. You're looking for a medium heat, so don't place the pan directly over the flames. Tip in the marshmallows and stir until melted. Add the Rice Kripies and stir quickly until everything is combined. Grease a 13 x 9 inch pan (a frying pan or Tupperware box will do if you're camping; or just roll golf-ball sized pieces into balls) and press the mixture into the bottom.
Allow to cool, slice into squares and eat. You could also stir in some chocolate chips, M&Ms or nuts when you add the cereal if you're feeling creative!
